Brazilian banks authorized to close for World Cup games

first_imgRio de Janeiro, Brazil | AFP | Brazilian bankers can breathe a sigh of relief: they’ll be allowed to close up and watch the national team in the World Cup on television.Financial authorities in Latin America’s biggest economy have told all banks they can arrange their working hours around the far more important live coverage of the “selecao’s” matches in Russia.Banks “may change the opening hours of their branches on the days of the Brazilian football team’s matches at the FIFA World Cup in Russia 2018,” the Central Bank said on Wednesday. The usual mandatory minimum of five hours opening will be reduced to four, the Central Bank said.Brazil’s much fancied team kicks off its campaign on June 17 against Switzerland at 1500 Brazilian time. That’s on a Sunday, but the next two games in Group E, against Costa Rica and Serbia, will be in normal banking hours.Brazil is the most successful team in World Cup history, with five titles.Share on: WhatsApplast_img read more

Goodell suggests ditching the PAT kick

first_imgIn this Jan. 12, 2014, file photo, Denver Broncos kicker Matt Prater (5) kicks an extra point as Broncos punter Britton Colquitt (4) holds during the fourth quarter of an AFC divisional playoff NFL football game against the San Diego Chargers in Denver. (AP Photo/Jack Dempsey, File)Roger Goodell doesn’t want to stand pat with the PAT. He’s suggesting potential changes in the extra point that, well, might have some legs. The NFL commissioner says the extra point kick after touchdowns, which had a success rate of nearly 100 percent, is too automatic. Sure is.And with few teams attempting 2-point conversion plays until desperation hits late in games, the old 1-pointer from 20 yards is the way coaches go. All that does is draw yawns. So Goodell wonders if the league can add excitement by making some major adjustments to the extra point, suggesting perhaps making a touchdown worth seven points instead of six, with teams having the option to run a play for another point. But failing on that play would cost them a point.Gimmicky, for sure. But if Goodell likes the idea …A look at how changes to the extra point would affect football:HOW AND WHO?Passing any changes to the playing rules in the NFL is, unlike the extra point kick, no snap. The competition committee meets with the players’ union at the NFL combine in February, where any new proposals or ideas are discussed. It’s not unusual for the players to have input in potential adjustments, as they did recently on defenseless player penalties. The powerful committee, chaired by Atlanta Falcons President Rich McKay, meets for about a week in early March and comes up with any proposals, whether from the teams or union or, yes, the big boss.At the league meetings later in March, the committee presents potential changes for discussion by all 32 owners, who can either vote on them or table them.McKay said Tuesday: “We do anticipate the topic being discussed.”KICKING AROUND?The idea of toying with the extra point is not entirely new. John Mara, owner of the New York Giants and among the most influential members of the competition committee, says “it came up for brief discussion in past meetings, but no action was taken.”It took the NFL years to come around on the 2-point conversion, which can be a pass or run play from the 2-yard line — and under Goodell’s apparent preference, could be worth one point if the kick is eliminated. The 2-pointer existed in the old AFL from 1960-69, and college football has had it since 1958.But it was defeated several times in NFL owners’ votes before it passed in 1994 as part of a package of changes to help the offenses.YEA AND NAYCoaches will hate any changes, particularly ones that would mean more decisions for them to make. They so rarely go for the 2-pointers until the fourth quarter, and are reluctant to do so then because, well, there’s nothing automatic about those attempts. Indeed, less than half (33 of 69) worked in 2013.“I will say this: Since 2000, I believe, over 99 percent of the extra points are made,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “It’s almost a given that it is going to be made. I’m sure that the competition committee will address it. As a coach you have to play how the rules are.”Short-yardage backs such as All-Pro fullback Mike Tolbert of Carolina shouldn’t mind the elimination of PAT kicks. Nor should running quarterbacks such as Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick and Cam Newton, whose improvisational skills would be a huge advantage.Kickers? They probably will shrug and practice their field goals — which is what they normally do regarding extra points anyway.WHO STAYS, AND WHYRosters would get slight revamping, with teams likely keeping at least one power back active every week and having two on the roster. Often, those guys also play on special teams, so their presence wouldn’t throw a lineup out of whack.PRACTICE WON’T MAKE PERFECTTeams would work even more on their short-yardage packages, beginning in training camp. They would use their PAT offenses in other situations on the field in games, too. While going for a fourth-and-2 near midfield is less rare than it once was, it might become all the more common when coaches know the more times they attempt such plays, the more seasoned their players will be when trying for the extra points.WILL IT HAPPEN?It’s impossible to gauge the owners’ thinking, and a three-quarters majority is needed to pass any rules changes.“I know a lot of times when we’re at owner meetings, those things are brought up, and it’s great when you’re in those meetings because you hear all the different opinions that are brought up with that,” Jaguars coach Gus Bradley said. “I’m sure there will be discussions about that. I’m excited about hearing all those.”Goodell doesn’t get a vote. Then again, it sounds like he already has cast his.___AP Sports Writer John Zenor contributed to this story.___Online: http://pro32.ap.org/poll and http://twitter.com/AP_NFLlast_img read more

BCCI moves HC against arbitrator’s stay to Royals’ termination

first_imgThe Cricket Board on Thursday moved the Bombay High Court against the arbitrator’s stay to the termination of contract with IPL franchisee Rajasthan Royals by it.The High Court will fix a date of hearing of BCCI’s appeal on Friday.Justice BN Srikrishna, who was appointed as arbitrator with the consent of both the parties, on November 30 stayed the termination saying that prima facie it was ‘illegal’.Meanwhile, in an other development, Kings XI Punjab today alleged before the High Court that the BCCI “deliberately” kept silent on arbitrator Justice Srikrishna’s disclosure that he might have to pull out of arbitration. The BCCI terminated franchisee contract with Kings XI too and this dispute has also landed in the High Court as Justice Srikrishna yesterday recused himself from arbitration. The former Supreme Court judge disclosed that he had once represented (as a lawyer) Bombay Dyeing, whose owner Ness Wadia has a stake in Kings XI. Following which, BCCI said that it had some “reservations”, and Srikrishna decided to pull out of the proceedings. But today, Kings XI lawyer and senior counsel Darius Khambata alleged that Justice Srikrishna had disclosed this fact on November 23, during arbitration proceedings between BCCI and Rajasthan Royals, but BCCI did not take exception to his acting as arbitrator in Kings XI dispute until yesterday.”BCCI kept silent deliberately… They strung us along for one week as the deadline for negotiating with ‘marquee players’ is to expire on December 6,” said advocate Khambata.Justice S J Vazifdar, who was hearing the case today, remarked: “The learned judge (Srikrishna) ought not to have recused.” .advertisementAs the High Court is going to hear both Kings XI’s petition, as well as BCCI’s appeal against arbitrator’s stay in Rajasthan Royal’s case next week, Kings XI today said that BCCI should postpone the date by which IPL franchisees are to submit list of contracted ‘marquee players’.As per the current schedule, teams are to conclude their contracts with four marquee players by December 6.Marquee players are the ones who had been with the franchisee for the previous three years. Every team can retain four marquee players, including a maximum of three Indians. After December 6, those players who have not been signed up by their existing team, can enter into contract with other franchisees.Kings XI’s case is that since its franchisee contract is terminated, it is at a disadvantage while negotiating with players. But BCCI lawyer advocate CA Sundaram said that the cricket body was not ready for this, though it was ready to postpone the next stage, when teams can start signing up remaining players, till December 10.Justice Vazifdar said he would pass order on this on Friday.last_img read more

Netflix to borrow another 2B to pay its programming bills

first_imgSAN FRANCISCO – Netflix plans to borrow another $2 billion to help pay for the exclusive series and movies that its management credits for helping its video streaming service reel in millions of new subscribers during the past five years. The additional debt load announced Monday isn’t a surprise. Netflix needs more cash because it has been spending more money than its business generates since its expansion into original programming with the 2013 release of “House of Cards.”Netflix expects to burn through $3 billion this year. The $2 billion that Netflix plans to raise in a bond offering will be lopped onto it existing debt of $11.8 billion. That includes another $1.9 billion debt offering that Netflix completed earlier this year. The borrowing binge appears to be paying off. Netflix has gained nearly 100 million subscribers since September 2013, including 7 million in the past quarter. The company recently predicted it will add another 9.4 million subscribers by the end of this year. The Los Gatos, California, company believes all its spending on award-winning programming will help it build an insurmountable lead in video streaming as other major entertainment companies such as Walt Disney Co. join the fray with a current crop of competitors that include Amazon, Hulu and HBO.Investors have been betting heavily on Netflix to win. The company’s stock is worth seven times more than it was five years ago, to give Netflix a market value of about $146 billion. The shares slipped $3.13 to close Monday at $329.54.last_img read more

Pak approves plan to open ancient Hindu temple corridor in PoK

first_imgIslamabad: The Pakistan government on Monday approved a proposal to establish a corridor that will allow Hindu pilgrims from India to visit Sharda Peeth, an ancient Hindu temple and cultural site in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, according to a media report. The Sharda Peeth corridor, when opened, will be the second religious tract after Kartarpur corridor in Pakistan-controlled territory that will connect the two neighbouring nations. India had already sent a proposal to Pakistan to open the temple corridor, the Express Tribune reported quoting sources in Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Also Read – Uddhav bats for ‘Sena CM’ “After Kartarpur, a piece of big news is in the offing for Hindus. Some of the government officials will visit the area and will later submit a report to the prime minister,” the sources said. When asked to comment on the development, official sources in New Delhi said India had made this request several times as part of the Composite Dialogue between India and Pakistan. The proposal was made keeping in mind the wishes and the religious sentiments of the people, they said. Also Read – Farooq demands unconditional release of all detainees in J&K Established in 237 B.C. during the reign of Emperor Ashoka, the 5,000-year-old Sharada Peeth is an abandoned temple and ancient centre of learning dedicated to the Hindu goddess of learning. Between the 6th and 12th centuries C.E, Sharada Peeth was one of the foremost temple universities of the Indian subcontinent. It is also one of the three famous holy sites for Kashmiri Pandits, the other two being the Martand Sun Temple in Anantnag and the Amarnath temple. Kashmiri Pandit organisations have been demanding opening of the Sharda Peeth corridor for many years now. “Pakistan has decided to open the Sharda temple. Work on the project will start from the current year after which Hindus in Pakistan will also be able to visit the site,” Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) member of the National Assembly (MNA) Ramesh Kumar said. “I am going to visit the place in a couple of days. I will also send a report to Prime Minister Imran Khan,” he added. In November last year, the Pakistani premier had laid the foundation stone for the 4-km Kartarpur corridor at Shakargarh in Narowal district of Pakistan’s Punjab province. The corridor is expected to be completed by 2019 and will connect Darbar Sahib in Pakistan’s Kartarpur — the final resting place of Sikh faith’s founder Guru Nanak Dev — with Dera Baba Nanak shrine in India’s Gurdaspur district and facilitate visa-free movement of Indian Sikh pilgrims, who will have to just obtain a permit to visit Kartarpur Sahib, which was established in 1522 by Guru Nanak Dev.last_img read more

Reports Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller to have shoulder surgery

Junior quarterback Braxton Miller (5) runs away from a Clemson defender during the 2014 Discover Orange Bowl Jan. 3 at Sun Life Stadium. OSU lost, 40-35.Credit: Shelby Lum / Photo editorTwo days after receiving his second Silver Football as the Big Ten’s Most Valuable Player, Ohio State junior quarterback Braxton Miller is set to have surgery on his throwing shoulder, according to media reports. The procedure is minor and is for an injury he sustained during OSU’s 40-35 loss to Clemson Jan. 3 in the 2014 Discover Orange Bowl.Set for Friday, the surgery should not greatly affect Miller’s status for spring practice, according to the reports. An OSU spokesman did not immediately return The Lantern’s request for comment Thursday evening. When asked about his shoulder after the Orange Bowl loss, Miller said he thought his injury only affected his ability to run the ball against the Tigers.“Throwing-wise, it was cool. I don’t know what happened,” Miller said in the locker room after the game. “I landed on my elbow, but it shot up right through my shoulder. It was hurting real bad.”The injury was not the first for Miller in 2013.Miller completed 162 passes for 2,094 yards and 24 touchdowns while throwing seven interceptions in 2013, despite missing nearly three games for a sprained MCL in his right knee suffered in the Buckeyes’ 42-7 victory against San Diego State Sept. 7. Miller suffered the injury in the first quarter against the Aztecs. The Buckeye signal caller rushed for 1,068 yards and 12 scores on 171 carries this past season, down from his team-leading 227 carries and 1,271 yards in 2012.Miller and the Buckeyes are set to start their 2014 campaign Aug. 30 against Navy at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. read more
